Book excerpt:  Timeless Secrets of Health & Rejuvenation

Water is perhaps the best and most natural beverage for your body. The next challenge is to find a source of water that doesn’t make you sick. Chlorine in your drinking water can certainly make you sick, according to a gigantic Finnish study of 621,431 individuals living in 56 towns. The researchers were able to determine that women who were exposed to chlorinated water had a 48 percent increased risk of bladder cancer, a 38 percent increased risk of rectal cancer, a 90 percent increased risk of esophageal cancer and an 11 percent increased risk of breast cancer. Men were not affected as much as women. Adding chlorine to drinking water causes a chemical reaction that results in the formation of a cocktail of carcinogens.

Some of nature’s most valuable and essential anti-cancer and disease-preventive phytochemical nutrients, which are commonly found in natural foods, have been discovered to form deadly cancer-causing substances when consumed or combined with chlorinated tap water. This has recently been confirmed by a joint study undertaken in Japan by research scientists at the National Institute of Health Sciences and Shizuoka Prefectural University. These deadly compounds have been named MX, which stands for ‘unknown mutagen’. Just think of how many people eat, for example, vegetables but also drink chlorinated tab water with their meal. The main concern is that once eliminated from the body, large amounts of these poisons are infiltrating our wastewater treatment and water recycling systems.

It is very disconcerting that especially the fresh plant foods we wash with chlorinated water generate these toxins. Eating these foods and drinking chlorinated water at the same meal certainly exacerbates the situation. The deadly cancer-causing agents this combination produces are extremely toxic in infinitesimal amounts. Thus, only very little chlorine is required to bring about a powerful destructive effect. All this creates the need for implementing new water treatment methods which do not use chlorine for cities and households. You may not be able to get your government to switch over to a healthier and more effective water treatment system, but you can certainly do this for yourself and your family.

There are many simple filtration systems that don’t cost you much and the can make a huge difference to your health. They are readily available in stores and on the Internet, and almost every new refrigerator comes with one already built into it. Just filtering out chlorine and some other contaminants is of tremendous benefit.

The following 8 methods are some of the options you have:

1) H20 Concept 2000 – More sophisticated and more costly water treatment systems, such as the H20 Concept 2000. Its unique technology removes pesticides and herbicides from the water and leaves your drinking, shower, and pool water as fresh and clean as pure mountain water. The H2O Concept 2000 uses electrical impulses to break calcium bicarbonate and magnesium bicarbonate into calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, with the byproduct being CO2. The CO2 is dispelled at the faucet in minuscule amounts. Calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate are the soluble forms of these two minerals. In their soluble states these minerals cannot adhere to the inner surfaces of pipes, the water heater coil, or glass surfaces and faucets. The H2O Concept 2000 will significantly reduce any existing scale over time. Although quite pricey at the beginning, this system saves money in the end (see Product Information). It is virtually maintenance-free.

2) ECOsmarte – Another excellent whole house water filtration system is the ECOsmarte (search the Internet). It uses dual ionization and oxygen electrodes to remove chemicals in both well and city water. It is a great alternative to water softening and reverse osmosis systems because it filters out calcium and bacterial debris while also controlling hard water scale build-up within the water pipes. Puritec is another company that offers a wide range of good filtration systems for every budget and need.

3) Water Ionizers – Much less pricey, yet very effective and excellent for people who are not only interested in proper hydration, but also want to cleanse the body from toxins, are water ionizers.

4) Water Filtration and Reverse Osmosis systems – The most commonly used methods to remove chlorine and numerous other contaminants from your drinking (and, ideally, shower) water are filtration and reverse osmosis systems. Although these can also be pricey, they are still an affordable option if you consider the cost of suffering through a bout of cancer. To help replenish some its lost minerals, you could add a few grains of basmati rice and a pinch of unrefined salt to the water.

5) Prill beads are another form of water treatment. Although they cannot replace a water filter, they still cleanse the water and make it ‘thinner’. This has a positive effect on the blood, lymph and basic cellular processes. Prill beads can be found in the U.S. though the Internet.

6) Boiling your drinking water – Of course, this old-fashioned method for several minutes causes the chlorine to evaporate.

7) Vitamin C – Another inexpensive way to get rid of most chlorine in water is to use Vitamin C. One gram of vitamin C will neutralize 1ppm (part per million) of chlorine in 100 gallons of water. This is particularly useful if you want to lie in the bathtub without suffering the irritating effects of chlorine on your skin and in your lungs.

8) Distilled water – Which is produced when water is boiled, evaporated and the vapor condensed, is the closest to natural rainwater. It is excellent for hydrating the body cells, but unlike rainwater, it is lifeless (stripped of its life force). As in the case of reversed osmosis water, adding 3-4 grains of basmati rice and/or a pinch of unrefined salt to one gallon of distilled water gives back some of the lost minerals; exposing it to direct sunlight for an hour or placing a clear quartz crystal in the water for an hour helps somewhat to re-energize it.

Distilled water is free of dissolved minerals and, therefore, has the special property of actively absorbing and removing toxic substances from the body. Studies validate the benefits of drinking distilled water when one is seeking to cleanse or detoxify the system for short periods of time.

Despite its potential benefits, distilled water can be harmful if taken for prolonged periods. Distilling water can lead to the loss of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride) and trace minerals such as magnesium – deficiencies that can cause heart beat irregularities and high blood pressure. Cooking with distilled water may pull the minerals out of foods, thus lowering their nutritional value.

When exposed to the air, distilled water actively absorbs carbon dioxide and becomes more acidic. Drinking distilled water regularly, therefore, may increase the overall acidity in the body. This was confirmed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency which stated: “Distilled water, being essentially mineral-free, is very aggressive, in that it tends to dissolve substances with which it is in contact. Notably, carbon dioxide from the air is rapidly absorbed, making the water acidic and even more aggressive. Many metals are dissolved by distilled water.”

Regular consumption of Cola/Soda beverages are harmful to the body

Because of their high content of sugar, artificial sweeteners, coloring, and other acidic chemicals. Studies have consistently shown that heavy consumers of soft drinks discharge large amounts of calcium, magnesium and other trace minerals into the urine. However, one major ingredient of these beverages, distilled water, may be another major factor involved in the loss of minerals in the body.

Although distilled water draws poisons out of the body, it is best to use it for only about 10 days at a time. Discontinue its use when you feel weak or otherwise unwell. It is best to avoid using distilled water as your general drinking water.

A Serious Warning about using Plastic Bottles

Try to stay away from water or other beverages contained in plastic bottles, especially the soft types. Many people now have large numbers of phthalates (plasticizers used to make plastic flexible, also used in the cosmetics industry) accumulated in their body. Plastic products are water and fat-soluble. The body’s natural way of protecting itself against toxic chemicals, such as those seeped from plastic bottles, is to store them in fat cells and connective tissues. This survival response can lead to weight gain and unsightly cellulite in women.

An estrogen-like compound widely used in plastic products is thought to be causing serious reproductive disorders, according to a statement by several dozen scientists, including four from federal health agencies. The compound, bisphenol A (BPA), is one of the most-produced chemicals in the world, and almost everyone has traces of it,or more, in their bodies. The statement, published online by the journal Reproductive Toxicology, was accompanied by a new study by researchers from the National Institutes of Health finding uterine damage in newborn animals exposed to BPA. The researchers indicated that such damage is a possible predictor of reproductive diseases in women, including fibroids, endometriosis, cystic ovaries and cancers. Earlier studies linked low dose BPA to female reproductive-tract disorders, early-stage prostate and breast cancer, as well as decreased sperm counts in animals.

BPA is found in polycarbonate plastic baby bottles, large water-cooler containers and sports bottles, microwave-oven dishes, canned-food liners, and some dental sealants for children.

The disastrous impact plastic has on the environment is difficult to determine. Currently, there are more plastic particles in the oceans than there is plankton. Plastic particles seep into the ground water from landfills; and rivers and streams carry them to the seas and of, course, back into our bodies through the water we drink and the fish we eat. To make a difference, drink only filtered water and try to use glass, ceramic, wooden, stainless steel or other natural containers and utensils whenever possible.

Some Important facts about drinking water that you may want to remember or pass on to others:

  • An estimated 75 percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
  • In 37 percent of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger. According to research at the University of Washington, drinking just one glass of water shut down midnight hunger for almost 100 percent of the dieters involved in the study.
  • Slight dehydration will slow down your metabolism by 3 percent.
  • Not drinking enough water is the #1 cause of daytime fatigue.
  • Research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease joint and back pain for up to 80 percent of sufferers.
  • A mere 2 percent drop in body water can trigger fuzzy, short-term memory trouble with basic math problems and result in difficulty focusing on the computer screen or printed page.
  • Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45 percent. The same amount of water can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79 percent and the risk of bladder cancer by 50 percent.
