On the heels of reports last month that revealed too many diagnostic tests are being done on adults, new reports have come out now, with warnings that some of these tests not only can cause cancer in children, but can induce new cancers in children who are being treated for cancer. For example, researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City reported that girls who receive radiation to the chest to treat childhood cancer have a high risk of developing breast cancer at a young age. Even those who received lower doses of the common cancer treatment face an increased risk of breast cancer later, the scientists said.

In a different report, the British medical journal The Lancet reported that CT scans can also give children cancer. The scans can produce life-saving images of head injuries, complicated pneumonia and chest infections. But if a child is exposed to the radiation from just two or three scans, their risk of developing brain cancer is tripled. Five to 10 scans can triple the risk of leukemia.
